WHAT IS DNS RECORD?

DNS records are information and details about domain names, their IP addresses, and the DNS resolution parameters that are kept on record by the DNS servers. When a user tries to visit a website or access an internet resource, the DNS system uses these records as an index directory to find the right IP address of the domain and also other relevant information. By configuring these records, we can configure performance, strengthen security, and configure functionality to the particular demands of sites, applications, and networks. DNS records are stored as text-based files known as “zone files” in the DNS syntax.

TYPES OF DNS RECORDS

A

The A or “address” DNS record type was created to map domain names to the IPv4 addresses. IPv4 addresses are stored in the A, or "address," DNS record type. Every IPv4 address is contained in each A record. Each A record has a Time-to-Live (TTL) value expressed in seconds

AAAA

It is a specified record much like A record, but it points to the IPV6 addressess. This is because the IPV6 provides multiple IP addresses than IPV4 and is more consistent in rendering. In the growing internet pace, the IPV4 addresses are becoming scarce and the usage of IPV6 addresses are becoming more significant.

CAA

The certification authority authorisation record, or CAA record, gives every domain owner the ability to choose the right certificate that the authorities are authorised to grant certificates for their domain. If the domain does not have a proper CAA record, no one can issue the certificate. Additionally, subdomains also inherit the CAA records.

CNAME

Within the Domain Name System (DNS), a CNAME record, also known as a canonical name record, acts as an alias to exactly one domain name to another. By navigating them to a single fixed domain, it maintains different services or subdomains easier and permits multiple domain names to resolve to the same IP address.

MX

The DNS record that indicates the email address for a domain is a mail exchange (MX) record. Multiple MX records are allowed for a single domain name, ensuring that email servers can be used also as backups. This record provides a multiple number of benefits, like enhanced security and spam filtering, as well as customised email for sending emails faster.

NS

Which server is authoritative for a domain or subdomain is specified by an NS (Name Server) record in the DNS (Domain Name System). It guarantees correct domain resolution by sending requests for that domain to the specified name servers. For controlling domain ownership and internet traffic direction, NS records are essential.

PTR

A PTR record points to an object which is, the domain name. A pointer record holds the domain name that is utilised for reverse lookup. It is exactly the reverse of the existing address in the record. This record facilitates the verifying the legitimacy of the connection’s origin such as email servers.

SOA

State of Authority (SOA) is one of the significant records which stores the details of the domain administration. It contains data such as admin’s email address, and the dates of the recent updates of the domain etc... It is necessary for every DNS zone to have SOA record as per the IETF standards.

SRV

The host name, port number, priority, and location of servers for a particular service are all specified by an SRV (Service) record in the DNS (Domain Name System). By providing data about where to connect, it is easy for users to identify services like VoIP or instant messaging. It also helps with load balancing and redundancy for network services.

TXT

TXT (Text) record helps domain owners to store any text data. Providing data regarding the domain, configuring email security protocols like SPF and DKIM, and assuring domain ownership are examples of general usage. Since they assist to prevent spoofing, TXT records enhance email delivery and security.
